University of Mysore: Program Details
This exchange program has been in place since 1993 and has allowed for the exchange of faculty. The faculty exchange currently allows faculty from SVSU to deliver lectures at Mysore, in the state of Karnataka in southern India. These trips normally last about 10 days and can take place at any time during the year that accommodates both Mysore University and the faculty person's teaching schedule. A sabbatical is not necessary because of the short duration. Features of the program are as follows:
- SVSU faculty are typically asked to present one formal lecture and one informal lecture.
- The formal lecture is typically to a large audience of students and faculty for roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour, and Mysore prefers if a written version of the "paper" can be forwarded to them in advance of the trip. Usually Mysore University will publish the paper locally and the audience will have copies during the presentation. The informal presentation is generally to faculty in the relevant department and can be more in the nature of an exchange of ideas with faculty counterparts.
- SVSU faculty are not compensated for the lectures but expenses for the trip are paid by as follows:
100% of the airfare from MBS airport to Bangalore
50% of the airfare for an accompanying spouse
100% of the visa of the faculty person (but not an accompanying spouse)
$200 towards immunizations for faculty person only
$100 towards gifts for hosts
- Mysore University will arrange for and pay for the ground transportation, lodging and meals after arrival to Bangalore. Housing is in a local hotel or guest house.
- A visa is obtained from the Indian Consulate in Chicago after receiving a letter of invitation from Mysore University. The Office of International Programs will assist with the visa process (& passport, if necessary), and provide guidance for obtaining any necessary immunizations.
- Selection of the SVSU faculty person is made by the Center for International Studies & Services in coordination with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
- Useful information can be obtained from the following faculty who have previously lectured in Mysore: Eric Petersen, Drew Hinderer, Janet Rubin, Bill Barnett, Gary Thompson, Carlos Ramet.
