Diana Vreeland has worked in the field of international education for the past 19 years – both as an ESL instructor and as an administrator. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Slovak Republic and taught at Komenius University and the Technical University of Zvolen. Diana has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Diana is particularly interested in intercultural communication and is an active member of MITESOL, TESOL, MAIE, and NAFSA.

Julie has been with the English Language Program since 2004 and has taught a variety of levels and courses. She began teaching ESL in 1998. She graduated with a Bachelors of Social Science from Michigan State University. In addition, she has a Teaching English Language Certificate from the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. She is currently a graduate student at SVSU in Communication and Multimedia. She has studied abroad (Mexico), lived abroad for nearly five years (Mexico) and looks forward to future travels. Julie embraces diversity and celebrates the many unique talents and experiences students bring to the classroom, the university and surrounding communities.

Ms. Osborn brings to SVSU a dedication to excellence in teaching. She strives to combine over 30 years of teaching experience with the up to the minute and innovative technology services available at SVSU. She is a member of MITESOL and TESOL. In addition to her MA, she has taken coursework in the teaching of reading, language acquisition and multi-cultural studies. She has participated in numerous workshops, conferences, and training sessions on a wide variety of ESL topics and issues. She has studied in Mexico and Costa Rica and understands what it is like to be an international student.

Judy Youngquist currently serves as an ESL Specialist in the English Language Program and as a Teacher in SVSU's Writing Center. An educator for over 25 years, she has taught all levels and sections of ESL courses and a wide range of English courses--from business writing to creative writing. Having been a student in Switzerland and later working in London, England, she understands many of the issues that international students face. Her professional focus includes second language writing, discourse analysis, and pronunciation. She is a member of MITESOL, TESOL, NCTE, and WPA.

Jessica, a native of Michigan, graduated with a Master of Arts in TESOL from Michigan State University. In her coursework she focused on ESL writing, language & culture, and sociolinguistics. During that time she also studied Portuguese in Brazil to experience first hand what her students would feel. She has been teaching in the ELP for 3 years and has taught a variety of levels and classes. She really enjoys teaching and getting to know students from all countries and cultures.

Jeannine Lorenger hails from Detroit (Michigan), Sosnowiec (Poland), Ostrava (Czech Republic) and several other places as well. That’s because she has taught EFL in Poland with the Soros Foundation, in the Czech Republic with the U.S. Information Agency and ESL right here in Michigan at various institutions. She is now at Saginaw Valley State University. Jeannine has taught classes with the primary focus on grammar as well as integrated skills courses (Grammar & Listening; Grammar & Writing) and Pedagogical Grammar for future teachers.

Lynda Allen is an English as a Second Language instructor at Saginaw Valley State University. She has broad experience at the University in teaching foreign students: since she joined the ESL Department in 2000, she has taught sections of every course offered, several special topics sessions, and in the Shikoku Program. Drawing upon her secondary education degree from Oakland University, Lynda has helped build the language skills of foreign-born children ranging from pre-school to eighth grade. Her desire to improve and expand the education of all students from all backgrounds also led her to instruct and tutor adult students through the Bay Arenac Intermediate School District, as well as volunteer with the Literacy Council of Bay County. Through her work at Saginaw Valley, Lynda is committed to teaching practical and sound language skills that will provide a lifetime of benefit and enjoyment for all of her students.

Melanie taught Grammar I in the ELP during the Winter/Spring terms of 2001. She recently returned to the SVSU program in January 2006. She is currently teaching Grammar and Special Topics.

Diane Deacon has extensive and varied experience in the field of education. In 2000, after 13 years in the field of special education, she began teaching English as a Second Language in the Carrollton Public Schools, which administers the only community ESL program in Saginaw County. As the lead teacher in a growing ESL program, she oversees all aspects of teaching, planning, staff training and writing grants, as well as teaching all levels of ESL. She began teaching at SVSU in the summer of 2005, with the Tokyo Technical College program and is presently an ESL instructor in the English Language Program
Jolene Jaquays

Jolene Jaquays began serving as an ESL Specialist at SVSU for the summer of 2006. She brings with her over 20 years as an educator in both public schools and post-secondary institutions. She has taught ESL in California and in Michigan at the college level, in community education programs and in public schools (K -12). Her Masters Plan B paper was on music in the ESL classroom.
