Robert S. P. Yien First-Year Writing Awards
This award showcases outstanding work by Fall semester English 111 writers. The following criteria will guide English 111 students who submit papers in application for this award:
- Papers are to be newly created during the Fall 111 course and written in response to an assignment in that course.
- Papers should stand alone--except in the case of a summary/response entry, in which case a copy of the piece summarized must be included.
- Papers should be engaging and significant within their genre.
- Papers should exhibit the fine qualities endorsed by the English 111 rubric.
- Papers should be word processed in a format appropriate to their genre.
- Citations, if used, should be formatted in MLA or APA style.
- Only one entry per student will be accepted; no late entries will be accepted.
- Qualifying papers must by accompanied by a removable cover page that includes the piece's title, the entrant's name, signature, address, phone #, email address, and instructor’s name and signature. Entrants can choose to type this information on a separate piece of paper and attach it to their essay, or fill in the form at the bottom of this announcement and attach it to their essay. Papers submitted without this cover page information will not be considered.
- Qualifying papers should be submitted by 111 teachers (with the permission of the student) to Helen Raica-Klotz, 232 Brown Hall, no later than Wednesday, December 17th, 2008.
Papers will be judged by a committee comprised of the 111 Faculty Coordinator and selected Faculty. Up to five cash prizes may be awarded:
1st $500.00
2nd $400.00
3rd $300.00
4th $200.00

No remuneration will be given for the right to publish your essay.
