Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute

Youth Leadership Mission

The SVSU Youth Leadership Institute will exist to provide an opportunity for high school leaders from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic communities in Saginaw County to gain valuable leadership training and acquire new skills that will help them lead in any community improvement projects.

Objectives

  • Provide opportunities for students to network with other student leaders and professionals.
  • Partner with the SVSU Student Association and leaders from other student organizations.
  • Provide learning experiences for students, to reflect on their own leadership style.
  • Promote the importance of diversity, citizenship and stewardship.
  • Discuss areas for personal leadership.

2009 Service Project

Some 50 high school students participated and 20 SVSU mentors took part in a community service project Friday, March 27 at the Houghton Jones Resource Center in Saginaw.

From approximately 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the students converted a vacant lot into a community garden by constructing and decorating a series of raised beds and trellises. They built 40 boxes and filled them with topsoil and compost to grow vegetables for neighborhood residents as part of the Saginaw Urban Food Initiative. The Saginaw Community Foundation provided support for the project.

2008 Service Project

The Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute selected the Mid Michigan Children's Museum for its yearly joint community service project. The mission of the Mid Michigan Children's Museum is "to provide a fun, hands-on place where children use their curiosity & creativity to learn about their world." Our Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute students and mentors were able to be hands on during our service project, which took place on Friday, April 11, 2008.

From mopping to sweeping; lifting and vacuuming; even working in the rain to clear the sidewalks--our Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute students did it all. Their assistance in this endeavor will make the process of the Children's Museum opening much easier. Thank you and congratulations to the 2008 Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute class for executing such a great service project!

2007 SCYLI Service Project

The Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute selected the Innerlink Runaway & Homeless Youth Shelter for its yearly joint service project. Innerlink began in 1973 in an effort to assist young people who have run from home or were unable to return to home. These individuals were lodged in the Juvenile Center for running away. Innerlink was created to not only meet the needs of these young people, but to also alleviate the need for police involvement. Innerlink operates under the umbrella of the Saginaw County Youth Protection Council.
