Assistive Technology
OCR & Scanner:
The open computer labs at SVSU have OCR software, OpenBook, and a scanner on at least one station which allows students to scan in syllabi or chapters from books. The text can be saved on the students M-drive or a Jump drive. If the student chooses to listen to the materials in the lab, they are responsible for bringing their own headphones. Headsets with longer cords are recommended.
JAWS:
This screen reading software can be loaded on any classroom computer for a student who is legally blind.
Assistive Listening Device:
An FM unit can be checked out from the circulation desk in the library on a daily basis.
E-Beam:
This system wirelessly transmits what is written on the board to the student’s laptop. The E-beam can be checked out from the circulation desk in the library.
ZoomText:
This software can be loaded on any classroom computer for students with low vision.
Kurzweil:
is available in the library to assist students who are blind or have low vision with internet research.
Braille:
Students who are blind may have tests, syllabi, and short documents embossed on campus. Textbooks and larger documents are sent off campus.
Testing Room:
A screen reader, OpenBook, is available in the testing room for students who are eligible.
