Emergency Evacuation Guidelines for People with Disabilities

It is recommended that individuals with mobility impairments prepare themselves for possible evacuation from all buildings on campus in case of an emergency.

Before an Emergency

It is recommended that individuals with mobility impairments have two escape plans-one for when they are in the company of a non-disabled individual, and one for when they are alone.

Individuals with mobility impairments should find and remember important locations in each building:  exits, stairways, phones, elevators, access to adjacent buildings.

Individuals with mobility impairments should identity two routes out of each building.

Individuals with mobility impairments should be ready to ask for assistance from colleagues or other students and be able to instruct them on the best way to assist.

Individuals who may need evacuation assistance are encouraged to register with University Police or Disability Services regarding the nature of assistance and submit regular work or class schedules.

During an Emergency

During an actual emergency, individuals who need evacuation assistance should call 911 immediately and give the location and type of assistance needed.  If possible, move to the nearest enclosed stairwell landing and wait for assistance.

SVSU strongly encourages all individuals with mobility impairments to carry a cellular telephone with them at all times programmed with Saginaw county's 911.  Individuals who need assistance programming their phones should contact University Police.
