Community Writing Centers

In October 2015, The Saginaw Community Writing Center (SCWC), held at the Butman-Fish Library in Saginaw, is the first on-site community writing center in the state of Michigan, staffed by trained SVSU tutors to help any member of the Saginaw community on any writing project. We can help you write a college application essay, create an effective resume and cover letter, craft a short story or poem--or help develop any other type of writing you might do. On the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 4-8 pm, the SCWC provides FREE writing workshops and one-on-one tutoring in the Butman-Fish Library, 1716 Hancock Street in Saginaw. Read this article from the Saginaw Community Foundation to learn more about Michigan's first community writing center.

As of September 2017, we opened a second center: The Bay Community Writing Center (BCWC), held at the Wirt Library in Bay City. On the first and third Tuesday of every month from 4-8 pm, the BCWC will provide free writing workshops and one-on-one tutoring, provided by trained SVSU tutors.

For our current schedules, including dates for indvidual tutoring and our workshop session topics, view our PDF schedules below or visit our Weebly sites. There is no need to register for the workshops or tutoring in advance--just stop by!

Additional Projects

We're proud to announce additional projects through the SCWC, which give us more opportunities to work with writers in the Saginaw community.  In partnership with the SVSU Creative Writing faculty, SCWC sponsored two ten-week creative writing workshops with inmates at the Saginaw Correctional Facility during the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 semesters; we will be holding these same workshops during the AY 2017-18.  And during the Spring/Summer 2017 semesters, we are held creative writing workshops with homeless teens through Saginaw County Youth Protection Council.  To learn more about these projects, click here.

The programming the SCWC provides the Saginaw community has been made possible by the generous support of the following donors: The Bay Area Community Foundation, The Saginaw Community Foundation, The Dow Corning Foundation, America Learns, My Brother's Keeper, Michigan Campus Compact, and Saginaw Valley State University, and the Public Libraries of Saginaw.
