Cancellation of August Commencement Ceremony

Due to construction work to the Ryder Center’s O’Neill Arena that will be underway, the Commencement ceremony previously scheduled for August 18, 2014 must be canceled.

Students who were planning to participate in the ceremony this August will be given the option to participate in Commencement exercises in May (subject to progress toward their degree, detailed below) or December. The details listed here apply to all students, including those who already had applied with the Registrar’s office to graduate in August.

Regardless of participation in a Commencement ceremony, if a student is on track to graduate – that is, complete degree requirements – in August, he/she will be able to complete his/her degree.  We know this is important to students moving on to careers or graduate school.

Students wishing to participate in Commencement ceremonies prior to the completion of their degree requirements (August graduates seeking to participate in the May ceremony, e.g.) must submit an email request to the Registrar's Office. This announcement supersedes all previous information on this matter you may have received.

Please note that students wishing to participate in the May 2014 Commencement ceremony must meet degree requirements by the end of the summer 2014 semester. This request must be made by email to

In the case of students originally scheduled for the August 2014 Commencement (which has been canceled) requesting to participate in the May 2014 Commencement, such requests must be made before Friday, April 4 at 4:30 p.m.  Students who request early participation after this date may not see their names appear in the May 2014 Commencement program, even if they are allowed to participate in the May ceremony.  [ Graduation Application (131kB) ]

We understand some students have family overseas who already have confirmed travel arrangements to attend an August ceremony. While a traditional Commencement cannot be held in August, SVSU recognizes students’ desire to celebrate their graduation with family and friends and will explore alternate ways in which we can mark this important occasion.
