About the Center

The Literacy Center at SVSU is located in the College of Education, in a state-of-the-art facility that fosters motivation for reading, writing, and math and utilizes the latest technology.  Students are assessed to determine their strengths and needs in reading, writing, or math. Our tutors then use these assessments to build individualized lesson plans that maximize student potential.  A one hour assessment is necessary for each participant prior to the clinic. A nominal deposit is due at or before this assessment.

While the students are participating in the clinic, parents or guardians can enjoy some quiet time in the Kittur Rani Channamma Friendship Room within the Regional Education Center or enjoy a cup of coffee at a campus dining facility.

About Our Tutors

  • Active, certified teachers
  • Hold master's degrees in Literacy and/or certification in Reading Recovery, or a bachelor's or master's in a related field.
  • Utilize a research-based tutoring system at every session
  • Work collaboratively with parents
  • Utilize data-driven instruction correlating with state standards

All tutoring is directed by SVSU faculty, Gretchen Owocki, Ph.D., and Laurie Ann Haney, M.Ed.
