Saginaw Valley State University is authorized by the State of Michigan to certify candidates at the elementary level (grades K-8).
SVSU's College of Education offers a baccalaureate degree in elementary education on its main campus and through its Port Huron site located on the campus of St. Clair County Community College.
SVSU also offers a traditional and accelerated teacher certification program to students who have obtained a bachelor's degree or higher on the main campus and at the SVSU Regional Education Center-Port Huron. We also offer an elementary accelerated teacher certification program at our SVSU Regional Education Center-Macomb in Chesterfield Township, MI.
Undergraduate students who want to pursue a bachelor's degree in elementary education should obtain advising on their university basic skills, general education requirements, and their chosen content area minors through the Academic Advising Office (1st floor, Wickes Hall) and advising on Teacher Education Program requirements through the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office. To schedule an appointment with a certification advisor, please call 989-964-4057 (option #3).
Once candidates are accepted into the Elementary Teacher Education Program, they may consult with a faculty advisor in the Department of Teacher Education: Elementary, Early Childhood and Special Education on their Professional Studies coursework and fieldwork requirements.
Undergraduate students who are interested in completing their program through our Port Huron site should contact the SVSU Regional Education Center-Port Huron at 810-982-5530.
Post-baccalaureate teacher certification candidates interested in the traditional or accelerated certification program must attend an informational session prior to making an appointment with a certification advisor. These seminars are held several times each semester on campus and at the SVSU Regional Education Center-Macomb. Upcoming seminar dates are listed here.
All interested candidates must fulfill all requirements for admission to the University as well as a second application process for the Teacher Education Program. Complete information on the Teacher Education Program, including program admission requirements, can be found here.
