SVSU Students Take Center Stage at MAHPERD Convention 2007

The Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance recognized Robert Hatten, current SVSU PE major, by giving him the Outstanding Major of the Year 2007 Award from Saginaw Valley State University.  The 2007 MAHPERD Awards Ceremony took place at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on Friday, November 16, 2007, which was also an evening of special recognition for several SVSU students.  Jeremy Kozak received the Susan J. Kolp Innovator of the Year Award.  Jeremy completed his teacher certification program at the Macomb Regional Education Center, and teaches at South River Elementary School in L'Anse Creuse.  Keith Dempsey, who received his MAT in Elementary Education at SVSU, received the Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award.  Keith is a teacher at Costello Elementary School in Troy.  Darrin Millar was given the Sports and Athletics educator of the Year award.  Darrin earned his MAT in Early Childhood Education at SVSU in 1999, has been teaching first grade at Magahay Elementary School in Sterling Heights for 15 years, and has been with the Royal Oak High School swim team since 1987.  Also at the MAHPERD Convention in Traverse City, SVSU PE majors presented "No 1 in Team."  This presentation included four games, Spider Web, Peanut Butter Pit, Mine Field, and All Aboard, which encouraged team building skills and activities.  The SVSU PE Club and other SVSU PE majors helped SVSU claim its first ever MAHPERD Cup by taking first place in every event!
