Since the fall of 1999, Saginaw Valley State University's highly successful partnership with St. Clair County Community College (SC4) has helped over 200 students in southeastern Michigan complete Bachelor’s degree requirements and teacher certification status. In addition, students in the SVSU Teacher Education Program at St. Clair County Community College can also obtain additional endorsements in Special Education by taking concurrent classes at SVSU's Macomb Regional Education Center in Chesterfield Twp..
Beginning in the Fall 2009 semester, Saginaw Valley State University, in partnership with St. Clair County Community College and Lambton College in Sarnia will offer Canadian students the opportunity to complete an Elementary Education Bachelor’s degree and Teacher Certification from the state of Michigan.
Elementary Education
Undergraduate students can complete over ninety percent of their Bachelor’s degree requirements at St. Clair County Community College or any accredited 2 or 4-year school. All professional studies (methods of teaching) classes are held on the SC4 campus, all fieldwork and student teaching is done locally.
Secondary Education
Undergraduate students can complete over half of their of their Bachelor’s degree requirements at St. Clair County Community College or any accredited 2- or 4-year school. All professional studies (methods of teaching) classes are held on the SC4 campus, all fieldwork and student teaching is done locally.
Students who already possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher may obtain Elementary or Secondary Teacher Certification through the SVSU Traditional Certification Programs on the SC4 campus. Most pre-requisites can be done locally or online, all professional studies (methods of teaching) classes are held on the SC4 campus and fieldwork/student teaching requirements are done locally. Unlike the Accelerated programs, Elementary Certification through the Port Huron Regional Education Center takes two years, and Secondary Certification takes one and a half years.
Both undergraduate and certification students must apply and be accepted to both Saginaw Valley State University and the College of Education Teacher Education Program before enrolling in most classes.
Students are urged to be advised by an SVSU certification advisor on the SC4 campus before beginning the application process. Advising is done by appointment only. Those who have a Bachelor’s degree must attend a Teacher Certification Information Session at any campus before scheduling an appointment to have their transcripts reviewed.
