Secondary Education
A Secondary Provisional Certificate is the initial document which allows you to teach in the State of Michigan. It is your "license" to teach at the secondary level. The Secondary Education program consists of the following components:
- Completion of an SVSU certifiable major, double major, major and minor, or two minors.
- Completion of the Professional Studies courses (taken upon admission to the Secondary Teacher Education Program).
- Completion of Student Teaching.
- Completion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in your chosen major(s)/minor(s).
In addition, students will need to complete First Aid and Adult & Child CPR training from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Certification of training in these areas will be required and must be valid at the time the SVSU Admissions and Certification Office recommends you for a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate.
Secondary certification includes:
- Grades 6-12 in content area major(s) and minor(s)
Secondary/Special Education certification includes:
- Grades 6-12 in content area major(s) and minor(s)
- K-12 Emotionally Impaired (EI) or K-12 Cognitive Impairment (CI)
