Post Baccalaureate Traditional Teacher Education Program
Elementary Education
Saginaw Valley State University is authorized by the State of Michigan to recommend students for initial certification at the Elementary level (K-8). The Elementary Education program consists of the following components:
- Completion of two academic minors.
- Completion of two planned program minors.
- Completion of the Professional Studies courses (taken upon admission to the Elementary Teacher Education Program).
- Completion of Student Teaching.
- Completion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Elementary Education.
In addition, students will need to complete First Aid and Adult & Child CPR training from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Certification of training in these areas will be required and must be valid at the time the SVSU Certification Office recommends you for a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate.
Elementary certification includes:
- K-5 all subjects.
- K-8 all subjects when teaching in a self-contained classroom.
- Grades 6-8 in your content area minor(s) - (with passage of M.T.T.C. subject area test(s).
