Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)
Secondary Classroom Teaching

About Our Master's Program

Teaching is a profession that raises daily questions about instruction, curriculum, assessment, and expectations. Come to Saginaw Valley State University and explore the big, important questions with us. How do learning styles influence my teaching and the students' learning in my Chemistry classroom? How do I balance classroom management with freedom to creatively express in my Art classroom? What is the best way to align my Geometry curriculum? How should I assess my students in English? How can I help my school's literacy efforts in Physical Education? How do I best teach about diversity issues in my urban classroom? How about in my rural classroom? How can I differentiate instruction for my World History class? The Secondary Level MAT program offers teachers a chance to explore these questions and more. You will have the opportunity to examine your content area through multiple lenses and see the answers to many of your questions.

Associated Endorsement

Teachers with an elementary level certificate have the option to earn a secondary level endorsement which will extend their subject area endorsements to grades 9-12. Additional coursework may be required to insure the student has an approved teachable major and minor selected by the student to teach in the high school setting. Interested candidates must schedule an appointment with a certification advisor to review coursework and state testing requirements for the endorsement and to discuss how this program will develop into the Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
