Elementary Level (ZG)

Open only to secondary-level certified teachers who wish to become certified to teach K-5 all-subjects; K-8 all subjects in a self-contained classroom.

Endorsement Requirements

  1. Successful completion of the following coursework earned after issuance of a secondary provisional certificate.  37-51 credit hours.
  2. Successful completion of the Elementary Education Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. It is recommended that the student take this test prior to enrollment in TE 420 - Student Teaching. Registration is available on the MTTC website.

Child Psychology: Complete 3 credits from the following:

PSYC 310 - Child Psychology (3)
TE 590 - Early Childhood Education (3) 

Art and Music Methods: Complete 3 credits from the following:

TE 322 - Methods of Teaching in the Arts; K-8 (3)
TE 508* - Special Methods in Content Areas: Teaching in the Arts; K-8 (3)
TE/THEA 465 - Creative Drama (3)

Children's Literature Methods: Complete 3 credits from the following:

TE 301 - Methods of Teaching Children in Literature; K-8 (3)
TE 508* - Special Methods in Content Areas: Children's Literature; K-8 (3)
TE 511 - Advanced Study in Children's Literature (3)
TE 586 - Integrating Children's Literature in Early Childhood (3)

Social Studies Methods: Complete 3-4 credits from the following:

TE 341 - Methods of Teaching Social Studies; K-8 (4)
TE 542 - Methods of Teaching Elementary Social Studies (3)

Math Methods: Complete 3-4 credits from the following:

TE 331 - Methods of Teaching Mathematics; K-8 (4)
TE 529 - New Directions in Mathematics (3)
TE 580 - Teaching Problem Solving in Mathematics; K-12 (3)

Science Methods: Complete 3-4 credits from the following:

TE 330 - Methods of Teaching Science; K-8 (4)
TE 530 - New Directions in Science (3)
SEMS PLUS - Science Education for Michigan Studies (1-3) 

Technology: Complete 3 credits from the following:

TE 571 - Technology in Education (3)
TE 587 - Technology in Early Childhood (3)

Physical and Health Methods: Complete 3 credits from the following:

TE 325 - Physical Education for the Classroom Teacher (3)

Reading Methods: Complete 6 credits from the following: - This requirement may be satisfied by previous reading course work taken at either the undergraduate or graduate level. See a certification advisor for clarification.

Special Needs: Complete 4-6 credits from the following:

TE 342 - Teaching and Managing the Diverse Classroom; K-8 (4)

TE 516 - Classroom Management Techniques for Effective Instruction (3)
or 
TE 547 - Exceptional Children in General Education Settings (3) and

Student Teaching: 3-12 credits required:

TE 420 - Student Teaching; K-8 (3-12)

Program Notes:

A general elementary endorsement on a secondary certificate is an authorization to teach all subjects in grades kindergarten to and including 5, and all subjects in grades 6 to 8 in a self-contained classroom. 

*TE 508 courses must be approved in writing by a certification or faculty advisor prior to registering.

A signature is required for any TE 300/400 level course. It is important to contact your certification advisor prior to registering if you elect to take a 300 or 400 level course.

Some of the Professional Studies courses may be applied to an M.A.T. program/Elementary Classroom Teaching. Contact your faculty advisor for an evaluation.

Upon completion of all coursework requirements and the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification Elementary Education test, the student will need to submit a completed Endorsement Application and a photo copy of the M.T.T.C. results to the SVSU Office of Admissions and Certification to add this endorsement level to their teaching certificate
