Special Education Mentor
Guidelines for Supervisors of Student Teachers who are in their own classroom and are seeking a special education endorsement (level 3):
- Attend initial meeting with mentor and student teacher.
- Observe student teachers in their classroom at least 5 times.
- Complete special education competency final evaluation; collect evaluations completed by mentor.
- Meet with student and mentor (together if possible) periodically to discuss progress and/or problems.
- Fulfill seminar requirement with student teacher (as determined by supervisor).
- Provide direction/assistance with Focus Project.
Guidelines for Supervisors of Practicum Students who are seeking a special education endorsement (level 4):
- Attend initial meeting with mentor and practicum student.
- Observe practicum student in their classroom at least 3 times.
- Complete special education competency final evaluation; collect evaluations completed by mentor.
- Meet with student and mentor (together if possible) periodically to discuss progress and/or problems.
- Provide direction/assistance with Focus Project.
Guidelines for Mentors of Student Teachers who are in their own classroom and are seeking a special education endorsement (level 3):
- Attend initial meeting with mentor and student teacher.
- Observe student teachers in their classroom at least 2 times.
- Complete two special education competency final evaluations (midterm and final).
- Meet with student periodically to discuss progress and/or problems.
- Provide direction/assistance with Focus Project, as needed.
Guidelines for Mentors of Practicum Students who are seeking a special education endorsement (level 4):
- Attend initial meeting with supervisor and practicum student.
- Schedule observation times and observe practicum student in their classroom - the number of mentor observations will be determined by the supervisor at the initial visit.
- Complete two special education competency final evaluations.
- Meet with student periodically to discuss progress and/or problems.
- Provide direction/assistance with Focus Project, as needed.
