Lakers cruise over Wayne
No. 1 Grand Valley State used a 19-point first quarter to bring Wayne State back down to earth in a 36-13 drubbing in Detroit. The Warriors came into the game 3-0 in conference play, but turned the ball over two times in their own territory in the first quarter. Wayne State redshirt freshman running back Joquie Bell, second in the nation in rushing, gained 209 yards on 33 carries and scored twice against a Lakers defense that had five starters injured for all or part of the game.
Ferris runs over Northern
The Bulldogs gained 321 yards on the ground and 462 yards overall in beating the Wildcats 42-24 in Marquette. Ferris took a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and a 28-7 at halftime as senior running back Shawn Grigg rushed 27 times for 201 yards and four touchdowns. The Wildcats got another strong performance from senior quarterback Buddy Rivera, who went 23-of-35 for 301 yards and three scores. Northern Michigan travels to Northwood on Saturday.
Tech gets first win of season
The Huskies stopped Hillsdale on a deciding two-point conversion with just over six minutes left to perserve a 14-12 victory in Houghton. Tech senior running back Lee Marana rushed 27 times for 125 yards and a score, while junior Kirk Williams caught seven balls for 82 yards and a touchdown. The Huskies travel to Ferris State for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
Indy dominates Findlay
The Greyhounds went up 24-0 early in the second quarter and never looked back, keeping the Oilers winless in the GLIAC with a 34-16 victory in Indianapolis. Junior Craig Jenkins ran 19 times for 130 yards and a touchdown in the win. Findlay, 0-4 in the conference, hosts SVSU for a 4 p.m. start next week.
