Comedian hosts Variety Show
October 2, 2006 —
The Cardinal Variety Show and its performers occupied the East Arena of the Ryder Center last Thursday night as part of the 2006 Homecoming Week.
Lee Camp, a New York City comedian/writer/actor who has opened for acts like Lewis Black and Jimmy Fallon, was the Variety Show host for the evening. He opened the night with a half hour of his own comedy.
Camp's jokes connected well with the school and students, as most of his humor related to college. He added in more comedy in between skits, teasing some of the students.
Camp said he enjoyed his time at SVSU, and he commented on the University being a "cool school" and very "laid back and fun."
Since the theme for Homecoming this year was game shows, all Variety Show skits revolved around that, whether it be pretending to actually be on a game show or dancing to "The Price Is Right" theme song like the SVSU Dance Team.
Students in the game shows did their best to be creative, funny, and boost school spirit.
SVSU's Homecoming rivals, the Northwood Timberwolves, were made fun of and pushed around at every possible chance, helping the school spirit to rise even more prior to Saturday's game.
Judges gave third place to Kappa Tau Epsilon (KTE) with their "Match Game" skit. Second place was Sigma Pi winning with their "Let's Make a Deal" skit and "Catching the School Spirit." First place was awarded to Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) for their "Hollywood Squares" remake, which included the "celebrities" of Dave Chappelle, Eminem, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"We like to show our school spirit," said TKE senior Dave Miller just before the winners were announced. "This and float building is one of the best ways we know how."
Miller also commented on how much fun TKE has participating in such events, saying it gives them something to laugh about for years to come.
Other performers included Alpha Sigma Alpha, His House, and Minority Group with help from the SVSU Hip-Hop Dance Team's rendition of "Star Search.”
