International Programs holds Study Abroad Fair

A Study Abroad Fair was held last Thursday in the Alumni Lounge, where information on 20 fall and 14 spring/summer programs was made available to students.

Kate O'Neil, a potential Study Abroad student, felt that the fair gave her a better understanding of the Study Abroad program.

"I have more first-hand information about the individual trips and now I'm leaning toward Ireland," she said. "Also, now I know how to start the application process, which is great."

Most of the people running the informational tables were students who have studied abroad and professors who will be traveling in the future to teach a study abroad program.

Dr. James Sullivan, an English professor who will be teaching literature in Italy in Winter 2007, said that, "Being there really makes a huge difference in understanding other people and their point of view."

He added that the benefits go beyond understanding others and can impact students' personal lives. He said that students who study abroad have an "enriched understanding of what it means to live here in our world."

Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Lee Trepanier agreed with Sullivan and stated, "International study is crucial for students today in a globalized economy."

Trepanier will be teaching a course in London in May 2007 that focuses on political science and is worth six academic credits.

Assistant Director of International Education Stephanie Sieggreen told students interested in studying abroad to "Just go. Don't even think about it, just go."

Sieggreen said that finances shouldn't matter: many scholarships and other financial aid opportunities are available to help fund the educational experience.

The deadline to apply for Winter 2007 programs is Oct. 15. Those interested can find more information at svsu.edu/studyabroad or contact Sieggreen at (989) 964-4473.
