Northwood squeaks by Michigan Tech

The Huskies had first and goal at the Timberwolves' 10-yard line but were unable to get the ball in the end zone, losing 13-7 at home. Northwood quarterback Kyle Kolbe rushed for a 70-yard score in the third quarter to tie the game at 7 but almost cost his team the game, losing a fumble at his own 22-yard line with five minutes left in the contest. The Timberwolves host 1-2 Ashland next week before coming to Wickes Stadium for Homecoming on Sept. 30.

Ashland gets first win of season

A week after losing 30-24 on a late touchdown pass to Grand Valley, the Eagles scored on a 70-yard pass from John Ferguson to Brandon Gilmore with 3:45 left to beat Hillsdale at home. Ashland again came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 10-0 lead. The Chargers tied the game twice, including with five minutes remaining in the game, but the Eagles, picked to win the GLIAC by two of the conference's coaches before the season, got their first win of the season.

Bell rushes for 318 yards in Wayne State victory

Redshirt freshman running back Joique Bell averaged 12.2 yards on 26 carries to lift the Warriors to a 35-31 victory over Mercyhurst at home. Bell, who had four touchdowns, entered the game as the 11th leading rusher in the nation, scored with just over four minutes remaining to help Wayne State to 2-0 in GLIAC play. The Warriors travel to Findlay next week before hosting Grand Valley, a 31-6 winner Saturday over St. Joseph's (Ind.), on Sept. 30.
