SA passes election resolution
September 11, 2006 —
A resolution concerning Student Association elections highlighted discussed topics during the SA general House meeting Aug. 28.
Under the previous election rules, presidential candidates not elected would be unable to serve as a representative that same year. The new resolution will allow presidential hopefuls not elected to retain an opportunity to be voted in as a representative.
"There were some representatives who thought that it would be advantageous to encourage as many people as possible to run for president," said SA President Andy Suszek. "This would allow people who have been around for a few years to be able to stick around (if they do not get elected)."
The resolution will allow an individual to run for president and representative simultaneously, with their name appearing on each online ballot. If they are not elected president, they then will have an opportunity to be a representative if they are one of the top twenty vote getters.
If the individual is elected president, the representative votes they received will be discarded and the top twenty will still be elected.
The resolution aims to increase competition for a presidential election that has seen the eventual winning candidate run uncontested the past three years.
