Student elections begin this week

With the elections for Student Association and Program Board approaching this week, students were invited to attend a "Meet the Candidates" event on Thursday night in the Alumni Lounge.

The two students running for PB president, junior Crystal Dillard and freshman Eric Skibbe, and the lone candidate for SA president, junior Andy Suszek, spoke to those in attendance. The students campaigning for the 20 available SA representatives spots also attended the event.

Suszek, who has been on SA for three years and is currently the speaker of the house, said his experience with all levels of SA will aid him in his term as SA president. He said his understanding of many of the problems that will arise will be a strong asset in his relations with those working under him in SA.

Both Dillard and Skibbe gave brief speeches, as well, and fielded questions.

Skibbe opened his speech by saying his main concern is "to take your tuition money and make sure to put it toward what you want." His aim is to help build a better campus life, targeting commuter students, and seeing what they want their money spent on in order to keep them on campus.

When asked about what quality would make him a good president, Skibble immediately responded, "Determination. I want to be your president."

Dillard spoke of inter-office cooperation being the key to a successful year next year.

"There is a lot of tension between the Program Board and SA," she said. "We're two of the biggest organizations on campus. If we come together, we can get more done."

Elections begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. and conclude Thursday at 5 p.m. Students can vote at the SVSU Web voting portal at www.svsu.edu/voting. Results will be posted Friday in the Student Life Center.
