Staff quintet performs

The Valley Wind Quintet performed a variety of French pieces in its concert, "Viva La France," on Tuesday in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

The quintet, in their 23rd season, consisted of five of SVSU's own staff: Lauren Ringo on the flute, Jane Bellen on oboe, Linda Hargett on clarinet, Bill Wollner on French horn, and Thom Zantow on bassoon. Wollner also servers as the band director at SVSU. Zantow, SVSU's librarian, was a substitute for the original bassoon player for this season. He seemed to take to the group quite well during the performance.

The quintet started off the concert with the piece "Scherzo" by Eugene Bozza. They completed the first half of the evening with "Quintet," composed by Paul Taffanel. "Quintet" consisted of three movements, Allegro con moto, Andante (which featured the horn) and Vivance.

After a brief intermission, the quintet played their final two pieces. "Three Pieces for Quintet" (movements Andante, Scherzo, and Finale) by Deslandres was followed by "Suite for Wind Instruments" by Charles Lefebvre, which concluded the evening.

"Viva La France" was only one concert of the Rhea Miller Concert Series. Other upcoming performances this year include SVSU's choir concert "The Bach 'St. Matthew Passion,'" the Concert Band's spring concert, a Jazz Ensemble performance, Artist in Residence Program, and Music of the Renaissance XIV.
