Third 'Battle' under way, ends Friday
October 10, 2005 —
"Battle of the Valleys III" started last night with a bonfire, and after some final scheduling adjustments, will end Friday with "Cardinalrama."
Sponsored by the Student Association and Grand Valley State University's student government, "Battle of the Valleys" is a week-long competition between the two schools to raise the most funds for charity. SVSU won the trophy last year, while GVSU took it in the event's inaugural year.
This year's winner will be announced after the third quarter of the football game on Saturday, Oct. 15. The game, hosted by the Lakers in Allendale, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The fund-raiser this year will be for Hurricane Katrina victims relocated to the mid-Michigan region. Many individual fund-raisers that were reported in the Vanguard two weeks ago start today, but several other activities were added and subtracted.
The annual Penny War and Administrative Cardinal Battle are two week-long activities starting today, along with students pumping gas for tips, street corner collections, a bake sale, and Dining Services selling "Caged Lakers."
A silent auction sponsored by the International Student Club is slated for tomorrow. The auction, which will feature items collected and donated by international students, will last from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Wednesday will feature a bowling night at Stardust Lanes. Admission is $10 at the door, but students can buy advance tickets for $8. The event starts at 10 p.m., and students can bowl two games; shoes are included in the price.
If $4,000 is raised by Wednesday, President Eric R. Gilbertson will spend the night in the Courtyard with students. He will be in the Courtyard from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
A 12-hour dance marathon will be the highlight of Thursday. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Multi-purpose room, students can sponsor or take donations to dance. Different genres of music will be played every two hours.
Additionally, the Paintballers Club will sponsor "Paintballing the Presidents," offering students a chance to shoot Gilbertson and other presidents from student organizations and clubs. To be held in the Courtyard from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., prices will vary depending on the amount of paintballs desired.
For $3, students can make their way over to the Cardinal Gym on Friday to see SVSU staff and faculty do their best Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller impressions during a dodgeball game, scheduled to begin at noon.
"Cardinalrama" will conclude the week's events from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. outside the Student Center. Sponsored by Alpha Psi Omega and other student organizations, the event will feature clowns, pumpkin painting, and fortune telling.
The competition is officially over at midnight on Friday night, but students can hitch a free ride to the game with the purchase of any Red Zone t-shirt. Three buses will be offered, and they leave at 1 p.m.
