Autumn Attire
October 5, 2009 —
As summer months give way to autumn, people are stowing away their shorts and tank tops and breaking out clothes that combat chilly weather.
But with a bleaker economic climate, people are getting back to basics with their wardrobes, says Mike Kuhle, co-owner of Epaulet, a Brooklyn clothing boutique. He says the recession has allowed cut out a lot of the fluff and allowed better manufacturers to shine.
A return to the American way
With a bigger emphasis on basic styles this fall, the Americana aesthetic has come roaring back.
Items such as peacoats, work boots, flannels, and plaids were all prominent pieces in menswear last fall and continue to gain steam this season.
Kuhle stresses a quality over quantity approach when buying, but knows people are more conservative with their spending now.
If opting for cheaper shirting, he suggests spending a few extra bucks to have the shirt tailored for a perfect fit.
J. Crew serves as an affordable option for shirting and staple items such as chinos, Kuhle says.
The demise of flash
While menswear remains consistent from last year to this fall, the emphasis in women’s clothing has changed quite a bit.
Fewer companies are releasing flashy silks and bold patterns, says Kuhle.
“Things are much more subdued and casual now,” he said. “No logos, no gold metallic thread, no ‘night out in Vegas’ looks.”
In place of these extravagant looks are lots of plaid shirting and dresses, skinny jeans, and items that are appropriate in both work and casual settings.
One area of women’s clothing that hasn’t become more subdued is footwear.
“As the clothing has been toned down, the shoes are really shining so she can still be the center of attention,” Kuhle said.
Pinching pennies
So how does the average college student stretch their dollar as much as possible when building their fall and winter wardrobe?
Kuhle suggests buying pieces that will give you the most versatility.
With footwear, for instance, he says it’s tough to find a more versatile boot for the money than Clarks desert boots.
With dropping temperatures, quality outerwear tops the shopping lists.
Schott NYC offers both men and women affordable, Americanmade outerwear. Kuhle especially recommends the company’s wool coats because of their extreme warmth.
“When you feel the difference between these and the Old Navy and Urban Outfitters of the world, you’ll see what you’ve been missing.”
