Cardinals going once, going twice, going out!
Battle of the Valleys
September 14, 2009 —
“Are you ready to beat Grand Valley?” That question was answered with thunderous applause and excited whistles at the date auction on Thursday night.
“It is a great way to meet new people and raise money for Battle of the Valleys,” said pre-med student Janessa Schmig.
Hosted by Kappa Tau Epsilon, a sorority on campus, the event closed with a profit of $1,284, closely reflecting its success in last year’s battle against Grand Valley.
The night’s climax came when communication and marketing student Mandi Boyd made an on-thespot decision to participate.
“It got crazy at the end,” said education student Austin Flores.
Spectators all around the room rushed to their feet as the action between two bidders continued to increase.
Her price rose to $200 and remained the highest of the night.
“It was amazing,” said Boyd.
Equally exciting was the appearance of Student Association President Ryan Kanine, under the alias of “Johnny Vegas.” Fully clad in plaid pants, suspenders and a blazer that would make a Vegas performer jealous, the communications and graphic design senior raised $45 for the event.
Each contestant worked to keep the bidding going, even revealing their clichéd desires to excite the crowd. Calling out to women in the crowd, Flores revealed his idea of the perfect date: simply “getting to know you.” Spanish and French student Roy Lash mentioned his talents in “the language of love.”
Members of Kappa Tau Epsilon said the fundraiser was especially rewarding, because they had previously worked directly with the Boys & Girls Club of Saginaw. Marketing student and third year member of Kappa Tau Epsilon, Tara Pippin, said she was excited to raise money for an organization that held a personal connection.
“And we want to keep the trophy. That thing is huge.”
