Davis and Pierce Roads
"Students will be able to travel on the newly remodeled Davis Road by the beginning of the fall semester," Jim Muladore, vice president of Business and Administration Affairs said.
"The city of Saginaw is currently working on their portion of the project, installing a water main to be completed in the next several weeks," Muladore said.
July 4 weekend marks the halfway point of construction. After installation of the water main, the system must be tested before the University contractor can begin the process of resurfacing the road.
"There hasn't been any delay with the progress of the remodeling," Maludore said. The University will pick up where the city leaves off, resurfacing the road, adding sidewalks and new lighting.
The University's share of the project is covered by resources from Capitol project.
The entire cost of a new water main, resurfacing the road, and adding a sidewalk and lighting totals $650,000.
"Davis road needs to be redone and updated to fit the look of the rest of campus and to better accommodate the amount of people who use the road," Muladore said. "It's a very attractive area; when the road work is done it will be the capstone and should have a very nice appeal."
Basketball court
"The new basketball court represents SVSU as of today, the previous one had the old cardinal logo on it and didn't fall in line with who we are," Athletic Director Michael Watson said. "It's a great thing. It's a tremendous representation of us trying to grow."
Watson, with the help of head men's basketball coach Frankie Smith, Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman's Administrator Angela Pohl, and Assistant Director of Creative Services Jill Allderdyce, designed and created the look for the newly completed basketball court in the Ryder Center.
"We wanted to keep the design simple," Watson asid.
The new court kept the name recognition of James O'Neal, although added a checking point designated by the NCAA symbol, and a new three point line. The three point line has been moved back approximately two feet as required by the NCAA.
"Also, we wanted a bigger Cardinal Head but keeping the rest of the design simple. We didn't want the design to be too busy and take away from the game," Watson said.
It took approximately three weeks to complete the project and was ahead of schedule.
The process included stripping everything off the floor, painting, adding varnish, and allowing it time to settle.
"It looks great. It will be a great recruiting tool for young men and women who are looking at us in terms of prospective basketball players," Watson said.
"Continuously improving our facilities keeps with the University's goal to enhance the experience for all our students," Watson continued. "It's a great time to be a part of SVSU."
Recreation fields
"The intramural field work is complete except now we are at the mercy of Mother Nature, waiting for the grass to grow," Jim Muladore Vice president of Business and Administration Affairs Jim Muladore said.
Part of the project, in addition to adding several new playing surfaces to accommodate more activities at one time, is a new sprinkler system and an updated drainage system.
The University budget for updating the field is approximately $230,000. This includes regrating the area, adding top soil, updating the drainage system and adding new sprinklers.
"Improvements to the field have been made to enhance the quality, and accommodate those students and faculty who use it," Muladore said.
Intramural games are contingent upon the grass growing in time for the September sports.
"I'm confident that it will be ready in time, if it thickens by Aug. 1 I think we'll have a good shot at it," Muladore said.
