Bar atmosphere quaint, inviting, welcome change

The Scene: Steamers

I may have found my new favorite bar.

Steamers Pub, located on 209 N. Hamilton next to the Red Eye, seems like the place to be on Thursday night. Lots of people, great drink specials, and foosball and Photo Hunt.

I'll admit, I've been to Steamers once or twice before, but with only a few people at the bar each time and a feeling that I wasn't wanted, I was not looking forward to another visit. After visiting last Thursday, however, my opinion is no longer a negative one.

The bar is long and rather small, but the layout gives excellent opportunity to meet new people and talk to someone that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. The foosball table and arcade games also created a good atmosphere of drinking, fun and meeting a new friend or two.

Many familiar SVSU faces filled the bar, so almost everyone was at least acquainted with someone. Only those 21 and older are allowed to enter and the bouncer at the door IDs everyone to make sure that there is no one underage.

Since everyone is legal, there weren't any stamps put on my hands to wash off later nor were there any annoying wristbands.

There was no cover charge, which is a nice change, especially since most popular bars on Hamilton Street charge to pass through there doors. The only things I paid for were my drinks.

An assortment of music was played at the bar, but consisted mostly of rock and alternative music. Those looking for a club-like atmosphere or a dance floor need to look elsewhere, and if a small space with only limited seating is not your thing, Steamers may not be the place for you.

The number of drink specials offered was almost unreal. Some included $1 Bud Light bottles on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to close and half off all drinks every Thursday from 7 p.m. to close.

For those looking for cheap fun this Thursday, I'd definitely suggest Steamers. A mere $20 could cover for a long night of drinking, conversation and good music.
