Program Board establishes new committees, events
February 25, 2008 —
SVSU Program Board has plans to keep the campus community active and find new and exciting ways to get students involved.
A big goal the board is trying to focus on is the traditions that the school has established. The Campus Traditions Committee within the Program Board is in charge of this.
"The committee carries out traditions but also tries to come up with new traditions," Mudel said.
This committee is planning to put on a 90's Night event. It will be a night of nostalgia, full of music from the decade and things that made the 90's memorable. The date for when the event will take place is tentative since it has yet to be voted on.
One of the new events being discussed is a film series. Though Valley Nights already puts on a movie night select Thursdays, this series is a bit different. The movies chosen are a mixture of recently released and more independent films that not many people have heard of. Some films include Sweeney Todd, P.S. I Love You, Across the Universe, and I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With.
Program Board President Stephanie Mudel said, "The whole point is that we wanted to make it free but also pick movies that people would want to see or might not have heard of."
A new film will be showcased every other week in the Malcolm Field Theatre. Program Board hopes that this free event will bring in a pretty big crowd.
According to Mudel, the Coffeehouse series is an existing program that has been successful and will continue on selected Wednesdays, provided that people still want to play and students show up. Due to the increasing number of students who do come to the series, the board may have to move it to a bigger place.
Program Board has also set aside around $1500 to $2000 to work with other organizations and come up with new things for students to participate in on campus.
"We're trying to put forth an effort to be more collaborative," said Mudel.
Program Board is working with URA's Valley Nights to put on Casino Night after spring break. This event is also tentative, as it too has not yet been voted on. If it runs, the night will include free food, games, prizes and card games.
To make all of this possible, Program Board has created committees that meet outside of general meetings and work on activities pertaining to their specific group. Along with Campus Traditions, there is also a Film and Lecture Committee, Music and Special Events Committee, and a Culture and Diversity Committee.
Information to be a part of or to attend the meetings for these committees is online in the Student Life section of SVSU's website or on Vspace. For other questions or concerns, contact Stephanie Mudel at srmudel@svsu.edu.
