February 25, 2008 —
The Cardinal club hockey team took third place this weekend in the second round of the regional tournament held in Midland.
Once again the Cardinals routed the Lansing Stars 5-4, beating them for the second time in a row on Thursday evening. Saginaw took on Lansing for the second round of the regional tournament at the Midland Civic Arena in Midland.
Sophomore forward Jon Tibaudo and freshman forward Brandon Clary led the team to a 2-1 lead with unassisted goals. However, the Starts bounced back and over the Cardinals gaining 3 more goals by the end of the first period.
Defensive freshman Kaleb Grapp brought the Cardinals up one with a power-play goal at 16:58 at the start of the second. Defense sophomore tied the score at 4-4 with a goal assisted by defense senior Tom Lagocki and forward junior Matt Fogal. Forward sophomore Jason Sugden slipped another in past the Stars goalie, shorthanded and assisted again by Lagocki, to take the lead with only 29 seconds left in the period.
Through the rest of the game, goalie Alan Fritch wouldn't let any more shots by Lansing come through, even on several power plays. Senior forward Brian Jensen scored the Cardinals' sixth goal assisted by Fogal and Miller. The seventh and eighth goals were scored by Jon and Chris Tibaudo.
Saturday night the Cards came back to play Hope College again in Midland, however losing 1-2. Sugden gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the first assisted by Tibaudo and Miller, but Hope came back tying the score in the second. Despite several power plays on both teams, neither scored for the remainder of the period until Hope broke the tie at 14:06 in the third.
Despite their loss, Saginaw played Calvin College Saturday afternoon, winning 5-2. They will travel to Rochester, Minnesota in two weeks to play in the national tournament.
