Oscoda's hometown heroes keep things simple

All three grew up in Oscoda, Mich., love bands such as The Clash and MXPX and have been playing instruments, in some form or another, for years. Two of them, actually, have been playing together since they were about 13 years old, and they are both named Jordan.

Their band is Death or Glory, and they are a punk rock band that has been around the Saginaw area for a little over two years. They played last year at the Cardinal Luau and also play at local venues, such as White's Bar and Olde Jamestown Hall, but they also have gone on shorter weekend tours to places such as Chicago and Springfield, Ill.

"We're hoping to do a tour in June, once school's out," says SVSU sophomore Jordan Wright, lead singer and guitarist for the band.

They also play when they have small parties at their drummer Jordan Vonzynda's house.

"For New Year's Eve, we had a room full of our friends, and we just started playing," Vonzynda, a Delta College student, said. "Those are sometimes our best crowds."

Some of their gigs are at more obscure venues. A couple of weeks ago, the band played at a roller rink and had a show this last weekend at a high school for a girl's birthday party.

"Venues like that are sort of different," Vonzynda said.

"We once drove four or five hours to play for less than 10 people," Wright said. "At some of those venues, you think, 'What are we doing here?'"

The band lost its bassist a little while back, but one of their high school friends, social work junior Eric Drocey, was able to step in for him about six months ago.

They try to keep their lyrics simple, focused more on human interactions and relationships.

"We're not a political band. We don't have any songs that are too deep or cryptic," Wright said. "We just play what we feel."

The band has one album, entitled Living for the Weekend, and also merchandise, such as t-shirts and stickers and are available by contacting them through their MySpace page.
