Get involved, not bored

At SVSU, boredom isn't an option. With over 100 clubs on campus, students have plenty of groups to participate in and choose from. Clubs range from dancing to singing to writing, offering a little something for everyone.

Biology club

The biology club uses campus and community involvement to promote the study of biological sciences. The club gives new students the opportunity to become acquainted with SVSU's biology staff and faculty. While activities are generally focused around biology, club president Paul Albosta encourages all students to join.

"We really have a lot of fun in every activity we do, and I don't want anybody to miss out on that opportunity," he said.

The club has been involved with activities on and off campus. Some of these include Relay for Life, Adopt a Highway, and Street Fest.

Scholarships are also available through the biology club. More information is available at www.svsu.edu/clubs/biologyclub.

S.U.P.P.O.R.T.

A club which may be unfamiliar to many on campus is S.U.P.P.O.R.T., which stands for Supporting Unplanned Pregnancies, Parents and Organizing Resources Together. The club provides resources to pregnant and parenting students completing their education. S.U.P.P.O.R.T. is working with Counseling and Health Services to add more resources to SVSU's campus, some of which may be used off campus as well. The club has no set standards an individual must meet before joining, but would like to see more interest in using the resources provided.

"I'd love to hear from students interested in learning more about our club," president Chaunie Saelens said.

There will be an essay contest this month for student-parents and winners will receive a cash prize. In March, the club plans to host a "Rally for Resources" event, hoping to raise awareness about the issue of student parenthood and pregnancies. Donations are accepted in the form of supplies for students in need. Direct any inquiry to Saelens at cmsaelen@svsu.edu.

Forensics club

Those who have been a part of the SIMS Annual Public Speaking contest at SVSU have probably come in contact with a member of the SVSU Forensics team. The competitive group was formed at SVSU in 2001 and became a registered student organiation in 2005.

The team travels across the state to other universities to compete by delivering speeches in a wide range of categories. Students may compete individually or in pairs. Individuals are recognized in each of the events, but team awards are only given to the top three schools in the competition.

The winter semester is the busiest time for the team, but students may join it at any time in the year. After being dormant this semester, adviser Amy Pierce hopes to see things pick up in the fall.

"While we are not currently an active team, we are hoping to revive the team next fall and begin competing again in winter 2009," she said.

Interested students may contact Pierce at ajpierce@svsu.edu.
