Fine Arts student adapts work by changing focus

As SVSU Fine Arts senior Samantha Eurich nears graduation, her sculpture, Ratio II, sums up much of her artistic focus of the last four years. A study in ratio, structure, and lines, this piece is displayed in Arbury Commons.

Eurich, generally working with a painting and drawing emphasis, created this piece during her intermediate sculpture class last year. Made from unbleached muslin and medium density fiberboard, the sculpture took about a month to make and required a great deal of precision work.

The name of the piece, Ratio II, is designed as a literal description of the piece. After countless models and a lot of frustration, Eurich was able to keep all of the lines at a one-third or two-thirds ratio.

Although not in her primary focus area, she feels that this piece demonstrates a departure from classical styles into more figurative and abstract work.

"I've been experimenting with the base concepts of art including color, structure, and the symmetry of lines," she said. "I'm really happy with this piece, particularly the clean lines and the nice mobility between the inside and outside."

After graduation in the fall, Samantha intends to work in the "real world" to gain experience and build her resume, eventually intending to pursue graduate school to receive her M.F.A.
