Internet radio still in the works for SVSU

"Gooooooood morning and thanks for tuning into 'SVSU Worldwide,'" is something that some SVSU students want to make possible for the campus community and people worldwide to hear.

Chuck Moser, Dave Palazzolo, Mike Major, and Steve Orlowsky are part of the Cardinal Broadcasting Association and have been working to create an Internet radio station dubbed "SVSU Worldwide."

"The great thing about having an Internet radio station is that we can reach anywhere in the world," Orlowsky said. "Parents, the local Saginaw community, and even students in foreign countries can listen along with students on campus."

Two and half years in the making, the founders say that the station will be available before April.

"This has taken so much time to set up because there have been so many steps that we have had to take," Palazzolo said. "It's not like we could go to Radio Shack and pick up $100 worth of radio equipment and call it good; for example, we had to special order our audio board from Argentina."

"We have had mountains of paperwork," added Moser. "Just like regular radio stations, we have to fill out and pay music royalties (to play licensed music) to three separate companies."

Orlowsky, the music director, said that student can expect to hear a wide variety of music, ranging from top pop and rock 'n' roll to hardcore and classical. Orlowsky assures students that this isn't going to be a Disney version of radio.

"This is a college-based and college-marketed station and we feel that we can play a wider variety because of that," Orlowsky said. "Since we are not regulated by the FCC, I'll do my personal best to keep the balance between too sensitive and obscene."

The group is also very supportive of local music.

"We absolutely want to play music from artists around the area," Palazzolo said. "We invite students to bring in any music from local artists."

Along with music, listeners can expect to hear anything and everything.

"What makes us so unique is that we have the ability to cover every spectrum," Palazzolo said. "We are covering all the media bases."

"We want to have a radio station with at least 14 or 15 DJs and have that many inputs into the content of the radio station," Moser added.

The station has four DJs at this time and a couple planned shows. Major, who is also the assistant director of Career Planning and Placement, will host "Career Talk," which will focus on what is new in the work world and have employers from the area as guests to give advice and answer listeners' emails. Palazzolo will host a request-type show where listeners dictate the music.

The history of radio at SVSU has been discouraging one. Students in 1972 created a radio station, but it failed shortly after launching. The four founders are very hopeful for the radio station this time around, though. "The University is definitley large enough now and it is ready for a radio station," Moser said. "We know that we will be successful because we are very dedicated and will listen to the students' wants."
