Fraternity flourishes after years of dormancy

With countless registered fraternities and sororities on campus, students have a wide range of Greek organizations to choose from. One fraternity that has seemed dormant until recently is the co-ed business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi.

Established at SVSU in May 1992, the fraternity has been in existence nationally for about 100 years.

"We're very small and business related," Vice President Kalenga Pembamoto said about the fraternity's lack of popularity in the past. "A lot of people find the term business fraternity very intimidating."

Delta Sigma Pi currently has about 40 members. The fraternity organizes events such as the Money Game, which educates students on how to build financial wealth in school and with a new career. It also participates in community service activities, like Adopt-a-Family, social events like Homecoming, and charitable events Battle of the Valleys and Relay for Life.

"A lot of students don't see how relevant it is to your life," Pembamoto said about events like the Etiquette Dinner. "Someone in nursing might not realize that business etiquette like that can apply to them too."

The fraternity is changing their format slightly this year.

"We've got a lot of new members," Pembamoto said. "We also have a completely new executive board."

They are optimistic that they will keep growing and make a difference in the University and community.
