The women's soccer team ended their 2007 campaign with a loss to Mercyhurst Friday in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament. The loss comes after SVSU bested Ferris in a hard-fought 3-2 victory on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the playoffs.

The Cards took a late lead in the second half, when junior forward Tammie Edmunds slotted home her sixth goal of the season. Edmunds stands among SVSU's most prolific scorers, behind only junior forward Kim Oberski and junior midfielder Stephanie Roy.

Yet shortly after Edmunds' goal, the momentum of the game shifted drastically to Lakers' side. Just 29 seconds after the Cards' 52nd-minute goal, Mercyhurst tied it up on a shot by midfielder Christine Rehnert.

The Cards couldn't recover their posture, and just three minutes later, Mercyhurst struck again, scoring in the 54th minute. Forward Jamie Schroter's goal turned out to be the deciding factor, as SVSU couldn't recover trom the deficit despite logging 11 shots in the second period.

The Cardinals' 9-7-1 season follows up their 12-7 2006 campaign, in which the team put up slightly better numbers in playing two more games.

A couple of figures in particular stand out: first, the number of shots the team took last year compared to how many they took this year. In 2006, the women fired off 360 shots; this year, managed to shoot only 200 times. That's 160 fewer chances at a goal. Which is important, since the team only lost one game by more than one goal.

The team also scored far less this season, loggin 34 goals to 2006's 62.

So the women seemed to have lost a little bit of their momemtum. But luckily, only four seniors are graduating in May, leaving plenty of talent to forge a competitive 2008 team with.
