'Luau' takes place of annual show

End-of-year concert replaced with multi-activity all day event

After the cancellation of a spring concert, Program Board has decided to team up with Greek Life to host a different event, the Cardinal Luau.

This free event will take place April 27 in the courtyard located in the middle of campus. From 5 p.m. until midnight, many activities will be offered throughout the evening. Some will include henna tattoos, sand art, tie-dyed t-shirts, volleyball, and lawn games. A pig roast and hamburgers will also be provided.

Student Life Director Janelle Hemingway said the event will be a great opportunity for students, as well as faculty and staff to bring their families to SVSU to enjoy the day.

Program Board President Crystal Dillard is just as excited and has high expectations for the Luau.

"I think it's going to be a fun event," she said. "We saw the need for an event and needed to finish out the year with a bang."

Aside from food and activities, the Cardinal Luau will be featuring local bands. Some of the bands set to make an appearance will include Reverend Right Time, Death or Glory, and King Mellowman. A stage will be set aside for band performances, a live DJ, and a freestyle competition.

Because of the date, Hemingway said the event will be a great way for students to relax before exam week. Students are encouraged to bring along blankets and lawn chairs.

"It would be great to look across the Intramural Fields and see lots of blankets, books, frisbees, energy and smiles," Hemingway said.

"We hope to see groups of students relaxing and celebrating their accomplishments of this academic year."

It is not clear whether the Luau will become an annual event, but Dillard doesn't think the possibility is out of the question.

Next year's planning will depend on the students and what they feel is needed around campus.

"It could be annual if the students want it to be," Dillard said. "If not, it was a good thing to try."
