Athletes compete in largest meet thus far

The men's and women's track teams combined for 21 top-10 finishes in the University of Findlay Classic this weekend.

The meet was the first of three road meets for the teams, and the largest meet they have participated in so far in the indoor season.

The men finished particularly well in the high jump, with two jumpers finishing in the top three. Junior Eltaro Hooper tied for first with a jump of 6'6.75", while fellow junior Joe Dugall took third, notching the same height.

Sophomore Sean Egan finished fourth out of a field of 60 athletes in the men's shot put with a distance of 50'1.75", and sophomore Dan Benjamin and junior Jake Morris both tied for sixth place in the men's pole vault at 13'5.25".

The men's team saw sophomore Greg Schmit finish fourth in the 3000 meter, tallying a time of 8 minutes, 50.45 seconds. Freshman Steve Genther finished ninth with a time of 8:54.76.

Junior Justin Grow took sixth place in the men's mile run, finishing with a time of 4 minutes, 27.68 seconds. Fellow junior Derek Stone placed just behind Grow in seventh at 4:28.01. The men's Distance Medley 'A' team won its event, notching a time of 10 minutes, 19.23 seconds.

Unattached SVSU representative Cullen Jamison took eighth place out of a field of 59 in the men's weight throw with a distance of 54'8.25".

Senior Ashley Bishop had another solid outing for the women's team, finishing fourth place in both the shot put and weight throw. She finished with distances of 43'25" and 53'11.75", respectively.

The women's distance medley 'A' team also won its event with a final time of 12 minutes, 16.74 seconds. The 'B' team took sixth at 12:42.72.

Junior Becca Rudey won the women's mile with a time of 5 minutes, 7.02 seconds, while freshman Jackie Reder took sixth, crossing the line in 5:18.11.

In the women's 600 meter sophomore Nicole Schmidt took fourth place, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 40.43 seconds.

Freshman Maggie Stalker placed fifth in the women's 5000 meter at a time of 18 minutes, 40.09 seconds, and the women's 4x400 meter relay 'A' team took tenth place in its event, with a final time of 4:10.30.

Unattached SVSU representative Mandie Gallier placed tenth in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 59.99 seconds.

Next weekend, the Cardinals will travel back to Findlay to compete in the NCAA Division II Team Challenge. The meet will start on Friday afternoon and at 5 p.m.
