The Cardinal Cage will soon play host to a series of free coffee house-inspired musical performances.

Sponsored by Program Board, the "Coffee House Series" will begin Feb. 7 at 9 p.m. when two acts will take the stage for half-hour performances. Nathan Bade, a Program Board alum, is tentatively scheduled to perform. Subsequent acts are still being considered.

Following the performances, an open mic will be available until 11 p.m. for those wanting a shot at showing off their talents.

The idea for the event came after Program Board members attended a National Association for Campus Activities Conference last fall. Those who attended liked the idea and decided it should be attempted at SVSU.

"Many other schools sponsor programs that are very similar to our current project," said Program Board Public Relations Chair Kristi Hunt, "and the support for these programs has been impressive."

Hunt says she is hopeful the series will take off, as its success could help SVSU see similar events in the future.

"I am excited about this series in particular because it will not only provide our peers with a unique entertainment experience, but it will also draw in local talents to perform," she said. "Upon its success, we will certainly consider continuing the planning for future semesters."

Subsequent dates for the series are March 14 and April 4.

Program Board is still seeking local performers who are interested in taking part in the series.

Artists should submit a demo to Student Life along with a name, e-mail address, phone number, and a mention of previous experience.

Program Board has been responsible for bringing in several musical artists to campus in the past.

Musical acts have included Sugar Ray, Simple Plan, Michelle Branch, Jason Mraz, Ludacris, and Dashboard Confessional.
