New allocations committee formed
January 29, 2007 —
A new committee has been formed with the purpose of allocating funds for registered student organizations and clubs on campus.
Vice President for Student Services Dr. Robert Maurovich was on hand at Monday's SA meeting to discuss a new allocations committee that has been put together for this semester.
The committee, which will work separately from SA, is aimed at providing registered clubs and organizations extra funding for trips and other functions.
"If a club or organization is registered and in good standing," Maurovich said, "then we are going to make it possible through an application process to petition to the Student Life Center to see what dollars they can get to help compliment what is going to be necessary to help them make their particular trip."
Applications can be found in the Student Life Center. Students will be asked to lay out the budget for their trip and explain its value to their specific organization as well as the community as a whole.
Maurovich suggested that the growth of the University is closely tied to that of its organizations and clubs, and providing a service such as this is vital to that growth.
"We've come to realize that clubs and organizations are a vibrant part of our campus life," Maurovich said. "And they really have an educational purpose."
Since this committee is in its first semester of existence, he said everything will be done on a case-by-case basis, and the initial allocation for the program is $20,000.
Maurovich made it clear that what was important to them was getting this committee off the ground and helping these organizations to improve the school, without breaking their own pockets.
"We wanted to provide some funds to take some pressure off the clubs and organizations, so they don't have to work the hallways with a tin can to try to make things happen."
Students still have the option of applying for funding directly from SA. More information is available at SA's Web site, svsu.edu/studentassociation.
