Student art exhibit cancelled

SVSU fine arts majors Paolo Pedini, Erno Klajo, and Dee Howell had planned to present an art exhibit last Friday night at the Resurrected Vintage shop on Court Street in Saginaw.

Due to a conflict with the shop owner, the art exhibit has been postponed indefinitely.

"It has been suggested to me that I do a story with [the Vanguard] on artists trying to go out into the community, and they need to be careful of who they get involved with" Pedini said.

Soprano singer to give concert tomorrow night

Artist-in-residence Julie Meyer will be giving a recital Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

During the first half of the concert, Meyer will be joined by her daughter, a fellow soprano who recently graduated with a degree in vocal performance from the University of Michigan. "Too Many Sopranos," a spoof on opera, will be performed after intermission.

General admission is $12. Students and senior citizens pay $5.

World AIDS Day observance

Student Life will be sponsoring the film A Walk Closer in honor of World AIDS Day.

The film is one of the first films to illustrate humankind's confrontation with the global AIDS epidemic. It is narrated by Glenn Close and Will Smith, and features interviews with the Dalai Lama, Kofi Annan and Bono, and men, women and children from four continents living with AIDS.

The film will take place Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

A candle lighting ceremony will precede the showing of the film.

Nominations for Innovative Writing in Teaching

Nominations are now being accepted for the new Innovative Writing in Teaching faculty award. Nominations may be made by students, colleagues, or yourself and should be submitted to Debbie Smith, University Writing Committee chair, EN 238, dlsmith3@svsu.edu.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 13, 2007.

Nominated candidates must be full or part-time SVSU faculty who integrate writing into course instruction to enhance student learning of course content and use writing in ways consistent with the goals of the academic program and SVSU.

Ferris State professor and poet to hold poetry reading

Poet and author Phillip Sterling will hold a poetry reading Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall.

Sterling has published poetry and prose in periodicals such as The Paris Review, American Literary Review, and The Detroit Free Press Magazine.

He is the author of three collections of poems, and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry, a Syndicated Fiction Award, two senior Fulbright lectureships (Belgium and Poland), and a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards.

Sterling is the founding coordinator of the Literature In Person Reading Series at Ferris State University, where he has taught for many years.

New Oakland Regional Education Center opening

SVSU is opening a new facility for graduate study in education. Classes will be offered at SVSU's Oakland Regional Education Center beginning in the winter 2007 semester.

The Oakland REC, located in the Niles Center at 201 W. Square Lake Rd. in Troy, will offer courses for three degree programs: Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), and Education Specialist (Ed.S.).

Registration for classes has begun and continues through Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Additional registration dates are Dec. 12 and Jan. 9 - 10. The winter semester begins Monday, Jan. 15.
