I did not set about to write three columns on Gary Peters, Pamela Gates, and Dennis Lennox. There is just more material every week to cover that no one could have foreseen the week before. From what I have read in the emails I received as well as the questions I have been asked around campus, there are many people interested in this saga as well as in how it affects students' rights across Michigan universities. It doesn't look good, folks. To start, I'll provide an update on what has happened since my last column. For those who haven't read my previous two tales of impropriety, I highly suggest that you do. »
GROWING PAINS -
SVSU is growing up. Most major campuses across the nation are quite used to having a religious doomsayer waving around a Bible or some other religious text. Michael Venyah may be SVSU's first such doomsayer, and he drew a sizable reaction on campus as he proselytized near Living Center North on Monday and Tuesday. »
It's been quite a journey getting there, but the seemingly impossible has finally occurred - SVSU has enacted a smoking policy that will please everyone. Ok, that probably isn't true, but this policy has a lot going for it. In the past couple months, two online forums and two live meetings were held to find a peaceful solution to the smoking problem that would please everyone. One forum alone brought forth over 400 comments from concerned SVSU students. The final policy keeps the non-smoke perimeter at 25 feet from all buildings, and added a smoking ban on all non-lettered lots and metered parking. »
Last week, a man named Michael Venyah visited SVSU's campus. He brought along his Bible to preach about the Holy Scripture. Certainly, a person expressing views about religion is nothing new to SVSU. »
Our campus has pretty much everything all other campuses have. We have dorms and places to eat and stores to shop in. There really isn't anything out of the ordinary on SVSU's campus - and I like that. »
