An article in last week's Detroit Free Press revealed that Baker College received $20.3 million last year in state-funded tuition grants - 38 percent of the grant program - despite only graduating 19 percent of its students. The news comes at a bad time for Baker as Michigan's colleges and universities are receiving only a fraction of the aid they once were and have been forced to raise tuition. As a result, lawmakers are asking themselves - and rightly so - why an institution with such a poor track record is gobbling up so much of the state's money. »
The fact that so many Americans lack health insurance is completely ridiculous.
Over 45 million Americans, or 15.6 percent of the population, do not have health insurance coverage. Within this number, 30 percent of all young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 do not have any form of health insurance and account for the largest uninsured age group. »
Gas prices are soaring ... again. Just last week, record highs in oil barrel prices were recorded and I can hear students complaining already. »
I would like to express my thoughts on the wireless situation here at Saginaw Valley.
Mr. Ken Schindler has stated that there is an apparent lack of interest in the University's wireless "hotspots." He stated that most of the 104 users access the "hotspots" from the Library. How can one think there is a lack of interest in the hotspots if the only area that is marked as a hotspot is the library? »
As a new faculty member in the College of Education, I have enjoyed reading the Valley Vanguard. The writing is crisp; the editorial comment is thoughtful; and, the paper provides good information, especially to those of us eager to learn more about SVSU. However, my delight turned to disappointment last week when I saw the full-page ad for education programs at another state university published in the Vanguard. »
