President's contract extension much deserved

There is often much discussion as to how much Saginaw Valley State University has grown, particularly in the last five to ten years. Discussion comes from all sorts of parties, including longtime Saginaw residents, experienced students - both on and off campus - as well as staff and faculty that have been here for as long as forty years. »

American opposition to tsunami relief efforts not surprising

Displeasure with various fundraising disappointing

The ignorance, arrogance and selfishness of some people in this country never seems to amaze me.

About two weeks ago, while working my absolute favorite (sarcasm intended) 11 am to 7 pm shift at McDonald's, I was listening to WIOG 102.5 FM, because, well, our store radio can't really get anything else worth listening to. It was this day when DJ Eric Chase was advocating for America to begin supporting the aid and relief being provided to the people in Southeast Asia after the massive earthquake and tsunami killed upwards of 131,000 people. I was surprised but pleased that a radio station in the area was trying to aid people half the world away. I was even more pleased when they announced that my favorite employer would be aiding WIOG's cause, and the two would team up for an effort to fund raise for the efforts. »

Ban nicotine, save lives

A burning question enters my mind when thinking of the future of everyone in the United States. Why is nicotine a drug that is legal in the United States? Are people and politicians blind to the fact that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. besides heart disease? And what do you think is the deadliest form of cancer? You guessed it... lung cancer. »

Billions of bad customers served

No matter how hard I try, I don't think I'll ever really understand why some people are such idiots. Education seems to be a priority. Kids take MEAP tests and ACTs and SATs and PSATs and showcase their knowledge of the ABCs and yet come out of school, grow up and leave the rest of us completely S.O.L. Take for example the good people at McDonald's. »

Learning about snow more difficult than expected

All I have to say is, what's the deal with the weather? I'm not talking solely about Michigan, but all across the entire world. Tsunamis in India, mudslides in California, and snow in Nevada! »

Scheduling problems lead to student leaving SVSU

submitted by Brian Fraleigh

As a second-term freshman in the pre-nursing program at SVSU, the question "How many credits are you taking next term?" takes on a whole new meaning. Let me explain. I had no difficulty getting the classes that I wanted for my first semester here. Sign up for Fall 2004 came and I was expecting the same. No problems, right? Wrong. I found out that not only did I have to wait to register until my name came up, but that everyone with more credits than I had, was allowed to register first. While this made getting useful credits towards my degree difficult, I was able to secure some classes for the fall term. Imagine my surprise when the time to sign up for Winter 2005 classes arrived and I discovered that again my name was at the bottom of the list. This time I was unable to secure any classes that I needed to move me toward entry into the nursing program. What is a student to do? »

Inauguration illustrates U.S. flaws

The formal swearing in ceremony of President Bush's second term occurs on Thursday, Jan. 20. While the chasm between American incomes increases, the amount spent on the inaugural ceremonies - $50 million - is outrageously high. The United States has a worldwide image problem when it comes to donating money to charities. In many ways this image is justified; of the world's richest countries, the U.S. spends the least amount of its gross national product, 0.14%, on donations to other countries. »
