Yoga is not a religion, though many students find spiritual aspects in practice. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit term ‘yug,’ which means ‘to yoke.’ Yoga, in western terms, is a series of stretching and strength building exercises designed to unite mind and body, which helps alleviate stress. The Yoga Sutras, the primary text of yoga practice, is a set of philosophical precepts encompassing breath control (pranayama), asana (yoga exercises), and meditation, among other things.
What should I wear? What should I bring?
Wear comfortable clothing which will stretch and twist with you. A yoga mat will be helpful but is not necessary, though you may want to bring a towel. The Yoga Club will provide blankets for asana/savasana use.
Should I eat before class?
It is preferable not to eat a big meal for two to three hours before practice. A light snack during that time would be acceptable. As there can be a lot of bending and twisting in yoga class, a full stomach may cause discomfort.
Is it okay to ask questions?
Absolutely! Instructors aren’t perfect - if there is something which hasn't been explained thoroughly enough, or you’re uncomfortable and would like some other options, absolutely let me know.
What if I’m not very flexible?
Yoga can be practiced by people of any strength, fitness, or skill level. The fantastic thing about yoga is that the stretches are easily modified to suit each student’s needs. The important thing is to listen to your body and honor your limits.
