Saginaw Valley State University
2009 ACHA Division 3 National Champions

The Cardinals defeated the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles to win their first hockey national title in school history. SVSU won the national championship in only 3 years of existence. That is the fastest any school has won the title in Division 3. The road to the finals was not easy as SVSU had to battle back from early deficits to win.

Game 1 vs Central Florida, Win 8-2: UCF got on the board early scoring on a deflection just :33 seconds into the 1st period. The teams battled back and forth for most of the period until 11:07 when UCF netted a goal on the power play SVSU came back strong and carried the play for the rest of the period. Doug Greene beat the buzzer with 2 seconds left on a mad scramble in front of the UCF net. The momentum carried throughout the rest of the game as SVSU went on to score 7 more unanswered goals. Jon Tibaudo had 3, Joe Swenders added 2, Ben Welch, and David Mendiola also tallied. The Cardinals also had Matt Fogal, Welch, Brian Jensen, and Nick Halaby all record two assists in the game. Jake Chaillier made 32 saves in net.

Game 2 vs Northern Arizona, Win 7-2: SVSU got on the board early as Brandon Clary scored just 2:32 into the 1st period. NAU answered back on the power play with a goal at 14:00. The Cardinals added some cushion to head into the first intermission on goals by Chris Tibaudo and Ben Welch. NAU scored to close the gap to 3-2, but SVSU was too strong down the stretch. Clary netted two more to complete his hat trick and Jon Tibaudo found the net with :08 left in the 2nd period. Tibaudo scored again in the 3rd to make the final score 7-2. Jake Chaillier made 41 saves to earn the victory in net.

Game 3 vs Grand Valley State, Win 2-1: SVSU fell behind early as Grand Valley scored on the first shift of the game. The Cards responded well as Doug Greene fired a shot high blocker side to tie the game at 1 with 17:52 remaining in the 1st period. The score would remain deadlocked at 1 until Brian Jensen fed Jon Tibaudo for the game winner. Tibaudo made a perfect shot to beat the goaltender glove side at the 8:21 mark of the 2nd period. SVSU then played very solid defense and had great goaltending from Chaillier to hold on to the lead and earn their spot in the National Championship game.

Game 4 vs Florida Gulf Coast, Win 3-2: Again, SVSU found themselves trailing in the 1st period as FGCU scored on an unfortunate bounce. A shot from the point hit a Cardinals defenseman and deflected directly to a wide open Eagle player for the easy power play goal at the 12:10 mark of the 1st frame. The Cardinals answered the door quickly as Doug Greene netted another huge goal for the Cards with an assist to Kaleb Grapp. The Eagles fought back hard in the 2nd and used their great team speed to catch the Cardinals off guard early scoring at 9 minutes into the period. SVSU turned it on late and began to dominate the play and the tides turned when Jon Tibaudo scored a highlight reel goal. He danced through the neutral zone, walked through one defenseman, and roofed the puck top shelf as the Eagle's defensemen were draped all over him. The momentum he gave to the Cardinals was what they needed to continue their winning ways. At the 9:13 mark of the 3rd period Chris Tibaudo scored the title winning goal on a quick breakout pass from Brian Jensen and Joe Swenders. The precise passing sent C. Tibaudo in on a breakaway where he buried the puck high over the goalie's glove. The game was not over yet, as SVSU had to hang on for 9 more minutes to secure the victory and it was not easy. Jake Chaillier made a number of phenomenal saves, the greatest coming with just over 3 minutes to go he turned aside a deke on a clean cut breakaway. Shortly after the Eagles rang a shot off of the post that nearly tied the game. SVSU held on and became the 10th different ACHA Division 3 National Champion.

Dad's Trip/Senior Night a Success

Seniors: Doug Greene, Nate Engstrom, Brian Jensen, Jake Trombley, Matt Fogal.

The Cardinals ended their regular season with a pair of wins over Lake Superior State University 8-0 and Lawrence Tech University
9-4. Friday night the Cards traveled to the Upper Peninsula with their Dad's on the bus to catch one of the final games of the season. The Cards put on a show as they trounced the Lakers 8-0. Jon Tibaudo ended the game with 5 goals, Matt Fogal chipped in 2 and Ben Welch added one. Jake Chaillier started the game and turned aside 11 shots before giving way to Dennis Miller who stopped the remaining 8 Laker shots.

Saturday night was a finale for the SVSU seniors as they took on Lawrence Tech University. Matt Fogal, Tom Lagocki, Jake Trombley, Brian Jensen, and Doug Greene played in their last game at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena. After a brief ceremony the Cardinals jumped all over LTU scoring on the first shift of the game. Matt Fogal sent a pass to the slot for Pat Miller who shot and Doug Greene tipped in for a goal just :22 into the game. The Cardinal attack kept coming as Steve Pelky scored with assists to Chris Tibaudo and Jake Trombley at 13:04. Ben Welch added a tally from Kaleb Grapp and Jon Tibaudo within 3 minutes of Pelky's goal. After several minutes of penalties were killed off a flurry of goals were scored. Brian Jensen fired a shot from the point that beat the goalie over the glove to put the Cards up 4-0 with 3:21 to play. Then LTU netted their first goal at 2:57. Nate Huckins answered their goal :13 seconds later with assists to C. Tibaudo and Trombley. Then with :40 left in the 1st frame Steve Pelky notched a power play goal from J. Tibaudo and Jensen. The Cardinals were up 6-1 after one and had the momentum rolling. LTU came out hard in the 2nd scoring twice, SVSU could manage only 1 goal in the period and that was from Greene on the power play from Grapp. Jake Chaillier started the game in goal for the red squad and stopped 18 shots through a period and a half. Matt Sutton came on in relief and turned away 10 of 11 shots. The 3rd period was all SVSU. The constant offensive pressure led to a 3rd goal for Pelky and another by Huckins (shorthanded). LTU managed to score a goal late in the game to make it a final score of SVSU 9 and LTU 4.
SVSU is off until the MCHC playoffs on February 19-21 at Southside Arena in Grand Rapids, MI.

SVSU Clinches MCHC Regular Season Title

The Cardinals managed to sweep the season series between themselves and Lansing Community College with an 11-7 victory Saturday night to move them into sole position of 1st place in the MCHC. With Hope College splitting with Grand Valley that left the Cardinals on top with one weekend of conference play left. The Cardinals first round conference playoff opponent is yet to be determined. The conference playoffs will be hosted at the Southside Ice Arena in Grand Rapids, MI February 19-21.

SVSU Remains Atop the MCHC

SVSU bounced back from their first loss in 13 games and picked up a pair of conference wins versus #2 Hope College and #7 Grand Valley State University. Friday afternoon paired the Cardinals against Hope in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season. So far the teams have split on the year and are atop the standings in conference play. Jon Tibaudo scored the lone goal of the 1st period at 12:18 on the power play with assists to Brian Jensen and Steve Pelky. Hope came out hard in the 2nd and netted two goals in :14 seconds to go up 2-1. The Cardinals fought back and scored 4 goals (Doug Greene, Jensen, Matt Fogal, and Fogal again) in the last 6:34 of the period to take a 5-3 lead into the 3rd. Tibaudo struck on the power play again at 7:40 with assists to Pelky and Fogal and later Pelky netted a goal from Fogal and Tibaudo to seal the game 7-3 in favor of the red and blue.

Saturday sent SVSU across state to battle the Lakers of Grand Valley. The Lakers got on the board first but could not hold on as SVSU responded with 3 goals and cruised to a 5-3 victory.

SVSU Loss Ends 12 Game Win Streak

Coming off of a long break is never easy, especially when you have to play on the road. The Grizzlies of Oakland University came out and punished SVSU for two periods until the Cardinals came too life. Going into the 3rd period down 4-0, SVSU came out with vengeance scoring just 1:07 into the period on a goal by Steve Pelky with an assist to Jon Tibaudo. OU answered just 1:17 later to go up 5-1. SVSU answered with a goal from Brian Jensen and just :33 seconds later on the power play Jon Tibaudo netted a goal from Ben Welch and Matt Fogal. At 10:04 Tibaudo scored another power play goal with an assist to Pat Miller. With the score now 5-4 and ten minutes remaining the Cardinals thought that they could make the comeback complete. Matt Sutton made three remarkable saves for the Cards in the 3rd period, but they could not net one themselves. Oakland came away with the win by a score of 5-4 and ended SVSU's 12 game win streak and gave them their first conference loss of the season.
