Liquefying Morality

                                                                by Adrienne Lewis

When He moved over the formless void

it was water that started the chain reaction

to cause the descent of our species, the fall

of Homo sapiens into the endless fluid debate

over whether the glass is half full or half empty

and if I steal is it really a crime

if my mother is dying of thirst?  Doesn’t He understand

how He has left us, washing down our egos

with spite for Him?  His creation gives a gainsaying nod

towards that little bite of apple taken

and so easily handed off

as she reached for a cool drink.
