This is the End      Adrienne Dyane Lewis

This is the end of the toilet paper roll

hanging next to my knees in the bathroom

of a house we recently purchased, and furnished

with Master Bedrooms and crosses

stitched on linen, over two threads. The plies

did not separate, leaving me

with even one sheer square,

to wipe away the remains

of our last supper in an apartment

I will never see again, the emptiness

that comes with starting over. A new roll

is just a cupboard away, but it feels right to sit,

think about what may have been thrown away.
