The Picture I Didn’t Take
Adrienne Dyane Lewis
There are two girls standing in navy
swimsuits in the picture I didn’t take. No
more than thirteen years old, they’re posed,
with arms wide, greeting
the lens of someone else’s camera—whose,
I don’t know. The shorter of the two
reminds me of my sister when she danced:
Her leotard brimming
with sequins. She defeated
gravity, spinning her body
on the tips of toes. This girl wears her smile.
The other, taller girl is hiding
behind her friend; Or maybe it is her sister.
Peeking around her frame
are the first signs of puberty:
a swelling in the hips and chest.
